The Strengthening Families
Initiative
Strengthening
Families is an initiative that involves early childhood centers working
with families to build
protective factors around children in order to
reduce abuse and neglect. Rhode Island is one of seven states selected
to pilot this innovative, cost-effective, proven strategy to keep
children safe.
This is truly a breakthrough approach. It doesn't just identify families
at risk of abuse and target them for risk-reducing services. It works
through an existing system and builds on the concern early childhood
educators have for all young children and the uniquely intimate
relationship parents have with those caregivers.
Rhode
Island’s Approach
Rhode Island is piloting the Strengthening Families Initiative program
primarily in Woonsocket and the Washington County areas. The project is
working intensively to provide technical assistance and training to
implement the Strengthening Families’ approach into the early care and
education programs. This program builds stronger, more effective
connections among parents and professionals in the fields of family
support, parent education, early care and education and child abuse and
neglect professionals.
