The Protective Factors

& How to Promote Them

Support in Times of Need

Child neglect can be a consequence of family crisis, a parental condition, such as substance abuse, or stresses associated with the lack of resources.

Early childhood professionals can provide links to work, job training, transportation and other means of economic security for families. They can connect parents to health care, child care assistance, substance abuse counseling and social or mental health services.  They can respond to family crises immediately and offer ongoing support. They can initiate contact or invite conversation if staff members suspect there may be a problem or emergency within the family.
