The Protective Factors

& How to Promote Them

Social Connections

Parents with positive social connections are less isolated, which is a consistent risk factor in child abuse and neglect. Social connections create an informal network of others in the community that parents can go to for help solving problems, such as last minute transportation or child care.

Early childhood professionals can build a community within their program by creating opportunities, such as potluck dinners or sports activities, for parents to develop friendships with each other.
