The Protective Factors

& How to Promote Them

Parental Resilience

Parents who are emotionally resilient are able to maintain a positive attitude, creatively solve problems, and effectively rise to challenges in their lives — and they are less likely to abuse or neglect their children. If parents have experienced violence or abuse and neglect themselves, they need different role models, encouragement and advice on alternative ways to raise their children in order to improve their own resilience.

Early Care and Education programs can do this by setting aside space for parents and offering a welcoming atmosphere. They can receive training in developing trusting relationships and make sure there is ample time and opportunity for those relationships to flourish. They can offer mental health consultants when parents need them and watch for early signs of distress and respond with encouragement and support.
